Your Forno Piombo oven is structurally built to last a lifetime, but its exterior stucco is constantly exposed to the elements. Between UV rays, changing weather, and the extreme thermal expansion and contraction of the oven itself, it is completely normal for the stucco finish to gradually weather.
Around the 3 to 5-year mark, you may notice the color beginning to fade or the surface developing a slightly "chalky" texture. This is an expected part of the curing and aging process for exterior masonry. To keep your oven looking pristine and properly protected, we recommend planning for a simple exterior color refresh every 3 to 5 years.
When it is time to refresh your oven's exterior, do not use traditional exterior house paint. Standard acrylic or elastomeric paints create a plastic-like film that traps moisture inside the oven dome. As the oven heats up, this trapped moisture will expand, leading to unsightly bubbling, peeling, and potential damage to the underlying refractory materials.
Instead, your oven requires a cementitious, breathable coating that allows water vapor to escape naturally. We strongly recommend LaHabra Allegro II. It is a polymer-modified, cement-based finish that bonds directly to your existing stucco, restoring a rich, uniform color without sacrificing the breathability your oven needs.
To show you what this routine 5-year maintenance looks like, here is an example of a customer's oven before and after a color refresh. After 5 years of regular use, the original light blue finish had become slightly faded and chalky. By applying a fresh coat of LaHabra Allegro II mixed with a Blue Grey color additive, the oven's exterior was completely revitalized.
Before: 5-Year-Old Faded Stucco
After: Refreshed with LaHabra Allegro II (Blue Grey)
