Instructions for Laying Tile on Your Santino Oven

Supplies Needed:

  1. ~25 sq. ft. of tile from Forno Piombo
  2. Thinset: VersaBond Thin-Set Mortar
  3. Grout: Polyblend Plus Sanded Grout
  4. Tile cutters
  5. Protective gear (gloves, mask, and eye protection)

Preparing Your Tile

To make installation easier and ensure proper fit around the oven’s curves, you’ll want
to cut your sheeted tile into three main formats:
1. Squares
  1. Cut each sheet into 8-tile x 8-tile sections.
  2. These larger squares will create a clean, even base around the lower part of the oven.

2. Strips
  1. Cut your tile sheets into strips, then carefully cut the netting between each tile so that only a thin strip of netting holds them together.
  2. This allows the strips to flex naturally and conform to the oven’s curvature.

3. Strips for the Oven Face
  1. Cut separate straight strips in sizes 3x1, 4x1, and 5x1.
  2. These will be used specifically for tiling the front face of your oven.

Application Steps

1. Apply Thinset in Sections
  1. Apply thinset only to the area you’re currently working on.
  2. Avoid coating the entire oven at once to prevent the thinset from drying
  3. prematurely.
2. Start at the Base
  1. Begin by placing one full row of square tiles around the bottom of the dome and
  2. along the neck of the oven.
  3. This will create a strong, level foundation for the rest of the tile.
3. Build Up with Strips
  1. Once the base layer is set, start applying the tile strips upward around the dome.
  2. The flexibility of the strips will help them conform smoothly to the oven’s rounded shape.
  3. Take your time adjusting each strip to maintain even spacing and alignment.

4. Filling Gaps
  1. Use your tile cutter to trim small pieces as needed to fill any gaps.

5. Tiling the Face
  1. Insert your oven shelf first to ensure proper fit and placement.
  2. Start with the 4x1 strips, transitioning to 5x1 as you move upward.
  3. Carefully cut the tiles nearest the archway so they sit flush with the base and do not extend past the edge.
  4. Use 3x1 strips in the center section of the oven’s face for a clean, balanced look.

Finishing Touches

  1. Allow the thinset to dry completely, typically 24 hours, before proceeding to grout.
  2. When grouting, mix it slightly thinner (more watery) than usual to help it flow easily between the small tile gaps.
  3. Wipe away any excess grout promptly for a clean, polished finish.
